With the expansion of Phuket as a holiday island and becoming a popular location for expat retirement, the Sarasin Bridge is an essential connection road for the economy of the island. It is the aorta for supplies to Phuket's heart. It connects the island with the main land in the province of Phang Nga.
The legend of the Sarasin Bridge however is sad. It tells the story of a young Thai couple who did not get the permission of the girl’s father to get married. They saw no other solution than to commit suicide on this bridge. Their bodies were tied together at the moment they jumped. Inspired by this legend, the Sarasin Bridge is still a location where Thai people decide to end their lives.
Today, there are three bridges. Two modern ones with several lanes, facilitating traffic in both directions. The historical Sarasin Bridge is however the most interesting. It has become a pedestrian bridge on which many people fish. The views of the fishermen villages on the river banks next to the bridge are nice. Surveillance towers in the middle of the bridge are accessible. You just have to climb the stairs and the views of all bridges and surroundings are spectacular. We really enjoyed this visit.
Met de uitbreiding van Phuket als vakantie eiland en de ontwikkeling als top regio voor expat gepensioneerden, werd de Sarasin Brug een essentiële verbindingsweg voor de economie van het eiland. Het is de aorta voor de levering van goederen aan Phuket's hart. Het verbindt het eiland met het vaste land in de provincie Phang Nga.
De legende van de Sarasin Brug is echter triest. Deze verteld het verhaal van een jong Thais koppel dat geen toestemming kreeg van de vader van het meisje om te huwen. De verliefden zagen geen andere oplossing dan aan elkaar gebonden van de brug te springen. Geïnspireerd door deze legende plegen nu nog Thaise mensen zelfmoord op de Sarasin Brug.
Nu liggen hier drie bruggen. Twee moderne met meerdere rijvakken die verkeer toelaten in beide richtingen. De historische Sarasin Brug is echter de meest interessante. Deze is nu een voetgangersbrug waar vele mensen komen vissen. Aan beide kanten van de brug zie je ook vissersdorpen. Wachttorens in het midden van de brug zijn toegankelijk voor het publiek. Je moet enkel de trappen opklimmen om alle bruggen te zien en de omgeving is spectaculair. We hebben echt van dit bezoek genoten.
