An active volcano of Mount Batur at Kintamani, Bali

Posted: 28 Nov 2015 11:27 PM PST

October 2015

Kintamani is an hour drive from Ubud. As you climb up the rad towards Kintamani, changes in weather is clearly felt. The temperature drops with greenery at every direction. At Kintamani, you are already at 5000 feet and it feels good if you are coming from hot and humid Bali lowlands.

Mount Batur and lake
The attraction of Kintamani is Mount Batur and Lake Batur. Mount Batur is an active volcano with the signs of its last eruption in year 2000 is still visible.  Adjoining the mountain is Lake Batur, the widest in Bali.

Many restaurants are lined up along the road that offers nice view of the mountain. We had our lunch at one of the restaurants that had "vegetarian buffet".

Trekking to Mount Batur is a popular activity. Trekkers normally start early in morning to reach the summit before sunrise. It takes about 2 hours to reach the top. It is convenient to stay in Kintamani if you are trying to climb the mountain. Else, you have to start very early (2AM!!) from your hotels in Ubud or Kuta.

Matsu Valley impressions of the endless Alaskan wilderness

Driving through Matsu Valley provides travelers continuously changing landscapes of rivers, mountains, flowers and glaciers. Most glaciers are visible high in the mountains but occasionally you see glacier roots close to the highway. The melting ice water brings rivers to life and provides beautiful landscapes when the river becomes wider and contains less water.

At the side of the road, a series of letter boxes mark there are houses in the area. Most people live so far apart that the mailman is dropping the letters in one central place. Welcome to the endless Alaskan wilderness.

Money belt/hidden pocket

This is something I've always avoided. I keep my money...never too much...deep in my pants pocket, not in a wallet; my cards and passport are elsewhere. However, everywhere I turn, I see recommendations

Christmas displays.

It has been a rainy day, with a glimpse of sunshine from time to time.

This is an image taken near Kirkegaten / Arnageren. Most windows are decorated for Christmas shopping now.

Hidden beauty at Gunung Kawi, Bali

Posted: 27 Nov 2015 09:27 AM PST

October 2015

This is an amazing place at the bottom of the valley with memorials cut out of the rock face. The statues carved are dedicated to the king Udayana and his family. It is believed to be constructed in 11th century.

It is required to walk down more than 300 steps to get down the valley. The route goes along the rice fields to reach the bottom of the valley. Here you reach the river Pakerisan river. The monuments are carved on either side of the river. The beauty of the place is enhanced by fountains and temples.

This place is about 30 minutes driver from Ubud. Since we went during mid day, it was quite a walk in hot sun especially while climbing up!!

Chaya and Tanu sipping coconut water to escape from heat!!

Visiting a reindeer park in Palmer, Alaska

The Palmer reindeer park is interesting to pay a visit. You support the owners to pay for the food of the animals. There are several types of reindeer and we discovered all of this during our visit.

The most popular reindeer we know from Santa Claus pictures, pulling a sled are in fact Karibu. The Karibu is the wild version of a reindeer. Once in captivity they become very domesticated and calm. We could easily touch and feed them.

The more active and aggressive type is the elk. You should not come close because the males will attack you. It is however still possible to keep them on the farm. A moose is even more aggressive and stronger, almost impossible to keep on a farm. Although many moose live in the Palmer region and you encounter them frequently on the road, you don't want to cross them on foot. They weigh about 800kg and will defend their territory.
